Penny Black's Insurance Week - 20 March 2014

Penny doesn’t appreciate being told where to devour a lunch of cucumber finger sandwiches, so it’s just as well she doesn’t work at the Bank of England.

Employees at the esteemed institution have to respect an off-limits zone that only the bank’s governor is allowed to access. As Penny understands it, the restricted zone is a beautiful sun-filled garden, but sightings of the governor enjoying his oasis of calm are as rare as finding a popular parliamentarian.

Never one to respect authority, Penny has already started sewing a dusky pink morning coat as part of her impenetrable disguise as a Bank doorman, ready to perform a daring break-and-enter scheme.

While recovering from her own midweek excesses, Penny was thrilled to hear Castel Underwriting boss Mark Birrell reveal that one of his own boozy misadventures was fundamental to his career in insurance.

A young Birrell entered the industry after visiting a university friend and sinking more than a few beers in a local tavern. It was only after the copious drinks that Birrell was told his ‘friend’ had found a job interview for him later that day.

Say what you like about insurance, but it clearly approves of such an approach to work.
