Penny Black's insurance week

While many have tired of crooning ex-soldier-turned-popstar James Blunt, Penny was pleased to see that one insurer was giving him a boost as he desperately clings onto fame. RSA will be strapping Mr Blunt into a plane and flying him over London in an attempt at a world record for the highest ever gig to help celebrate its 300th birthday.

Talking of RSA, the insurer sponsored last week's one-day cricket match between Ireland and Australia as part of its ongoing deal with the team, followed by the appropriately nicknamed Blarney Army. Among those at the match at Clontarf in Dublin, was international boss Simon Leigh, who had promised to give a £20 donation to charity for every six. However, when one bumped into Mr Leigh three overs into the Australian innings, he looked concerned, not having realised the ground — far from being the largest the Aussies will have ever played on — had shorter than anticipated boundaries.

On the subject of hindsight, Penny met up with Richard Forth of forensic accountants Forths recently and must try and get up to Leeds for the firm's next Christmas party judging by the tales of past soirees. At its first bash, Mr Forth was left with a hefty bill when a round of flaming sambuccas left a greater mark on the Chinese restaurant they were celebrating in than it did on the assembled team's heads the next morning. It is fair to say Mr Forth and his cohorts have not been back since.

Penny is always ready to indulge her sweet tooth so of course said "oh yes" when a presented with a delicious looking cupcake from one of her insurance contacts. In fact there was a cake for each of her colleagues, generously sent by the team at Churchill in celebration of its 21st birthday. Having come of age, Penny wonders where the brand will spend its next landmark birthday as a question mark over its parent company persists.
