Dead reckoning

We live in interesting times, in which everybody over the age of 40 has seen the planet's population double to 6.5 billion people. When our grandparents were born, population density was just a quarter of the 112 people per square mile it is today. Such rapid growth would be categorised as a plague spike in any species other than Homo sapiens.
